hopes-dreamsIt’s a cold, drizzly winter afternoon in my little corner of the world, the kind of dreary weather that makes me long for warm April days.  I look forward to the promise of springtime, to planting seeds that I hope will one day become drifts of glorious blooms. Although not every seed germinates, to me each one represents hopes and dreams. The hope for beautiful bouquets to grace our table. For butterflies and honey bees buzzing around fragrant blossoms. And dreams of a comfy lawn chair under one of the big shade trees, a great book, and a glass of cold lemonade. Aaaahh. . .

Hopes and Dreams

We humans are a lot like those seeds sprouting tiny roots, seeking nutrients from the rich soil in order to germinate. The difference is that the seeds we plant — hopes and dreams — often take a lot longer to grow.

Dreams need time to put down such solid roots that they can’t be ripped out by setbacks and criticism. Hope is what keeps those dreams alive.

Just like flower seeds, dreams need sunshine, fresh air, and plenty of water to flourish. People who believe in us and encourage us are the “sunshine” we need, especially when belief in our dreams falters. We need the “fresh air” of help from others through collaboration and brainstorming to find solutions. And “plenty of water,” well, that’s another way of saying persistence. Does a daisy stop growing because a root bumps into a rock? Of course not! That root keeps right on growing, seeking a new path around that rock.
